What does this designation for my online course mean?
Answer
If you are taking an online course, in its description in Banner, there will be one of 4 designations on it:
- Online Asynchronous Course - This means a course that students participate in entirely online and there are no pre-scheduled sessions, so within course deadlines, work can occur at any time. This course works for students on campus, near campus, or even in different states or countries.
- Online Synchronous Course - This is a course that uses web-based technologies so courses can be held online at pre-scheduled times. Synchronous media is used to create a real-time classroom experience, just digitally. This course can work for on campus students, near campus students, and those in different states or countries, though for those far from campus time-zone issues may be a concern.
- Hybrid Course - This means that there will be both asynchronous course activities online that can occur at any time, and class sessions that occur in real-time within a classroom on campus. This can work for on campus or near campus students.
- Dual Course - This is a course that take place simultaneously on-campus in a classroom, and online through a live conferencing system for students off-campus. This course can work for on campus students, near campus students, and those in different states or countries, though for those far from campus time-zone issues may be a concern.
